Business Spotlight: NY’s Finest Roofing & Siding, Inc.

Here’s the story of a fellow Long Islander, Justin Greenfield and his partner, Rony Carvajal Garcia, owners of NY’s Finest Roofing & Siding:

Hey Justin & Rony! How did you get started in the roofing and siding business?

Justin: I actually started very young. As a teenager, I got to learn from my father who had a roofing and siding company. I spent most weekends and summer vacations as his “apprentice”, learning the in’s and out’s of the roofing business.

Once I graduated from Copiague High School, I went to work for my father full time, along with my brother. In 2001, the three of us opened up our own roofing and siding company as partners. About 6 years later, I went out on my own as a subcontractor, which led to me opening up NY’s Finest Roofing and Siding, where we offer not only residential roofing, but also commercial roofing, flat roofing, siding installation and roof replacement among other services.

What types of services does NY’s Finest Roofing and Siding provide?

We mainly focus on roofing and siding, almost exclusively. We take pride in being true experts at installing, re-roofing, inspections, and emergency repair roofing and siding. We also install windows and doors. We do both commercial and residential; pitched, flat or oddly shaped roofing too!

What is one thing NY’s Finest Roofing and Siding is known for over it’s competitors?

Quality is #1 to us! It is always our goal to leave our clients 100% satisfied with our work, communication and quality. One of the most satisfying experiences to us is getting a new 5-star review!

We also use a ventilation system in our roof installs which allows the roof to “breathe”. It brings an inflow of air, circulates it and gets it out. This process ensures the shingles do not warp, adding longevity to your roofing investment.

What are your ties to Long Island?

Justin: Born and raised! I grew up in Amityville. I went to St Martin of Tours and graduated from Copiague High School. Now, I’m just a little bit west; I call Massapequa my home with my wife and two daughters.

Is NY’s Finest Roofing & Siding involved in any community groups or charity organizations?

Giving back to the community is very important to us. We help provide for local churches and synagogues, whether it be time, funding or even services. Check out the work we did on this church:

We are also very proud to be a part of the local Chambers of Commerce and we always try to do our best in terms of donating for fundraisers to local schools and charity organizations.

What was the biggest risk your business ever took?

Probably buying the property for our new offices at 421 Sunrise Highway, North Service Rd in West Islip. It was a large investment for the business, but we are very happy to have a permanent and future home for our business.

What is the biggest “win” in your business’ history?

We were recently certified as a Google Guaranteed Business. The Google Guarantee helps convey trust and gives customers a peace of mind knowing they are dealing with a trusted professional. We had to go through an in-depth background check and analysis of our business in order to get certified by Google.

What else should we know about NY’s Finest Roofing and Siding?

NY’s Finest Roofing and Siding is a family-owned and operated, 3rd generation contracting company. We are fully licensed and insured, service Nassau, Suffolk and the 5 boros. When you work with NY’s Finest Roofing and Siding, you deal directly with us, the owners, and get personalized and professional service. This includes free estimates and free expert advice.

Our ultimate goal is to make our clients happy with the work we provide to them. Getting work done on your house is a large and sometimes stressful investment and one which you need to live with, literally. We take so much pride in our work and professionalism, we aim to make the experience an excellent and stress-free one.

Thanks so much Justin & Rony! We are excited to have the chance to learn your story. Where can potential clients find you?

Business Spotlight: Jesco Brick & Concrete Masonry

Here’s the story of a fellow Long Islander, Brett Ladd, President and CEO of Jesco Brick & Concrete Masonry.

Hey Brett! Let’s start from the beginning. As the President/CEO/Artistic Director/Founder of Jesco Brick & Concrete Masonry, have you always been entrepreneurial?

Absolutely! I was THAT kid! You know, the one who sold candy in school to make some extra money. Thankfully I learned to hustle and work hard at a young age and I still apply those principles in my work today.

Tell us about the pre-Jesco Brett.

I am originally from Queens but moved to Nesconset when I was 13 and attended Sachem Schools. At 17 years old, I decided to lease a coffee truck route as my first real entrepreneurial venture (not including my childhood candy game). two years later, I started a successful towing business with 4 tow trucks. After running the business for 14 years, I sold the towing business, having grown it to 32 trucks.

Is that when Jesco was born?

Yes, well sort of. At this point I am a young man who has already created a business, grown it and sold it. The entrepreneur in me was looking for more challenging work, and this time I wanted to do something I was passionate about where I could incorporate my artistic expression. I was always interested in design and creation. It was at this point that I spoke with a close family member who was in the masonry business. I spent the next year shadowing him on his every day routine. I must have asked a million questions of him in order to really get to know the business. I knew masonry and artistic creations was exactly what I wanted to do. After picking his brain, I asked for (and received) his blessing to go out on my own… and Jesco was born!

What is the one thing Jesco Brick & Concrete is known for over it’s competitors?

With Jesco, its not just about aesthetics. There are many talented masonry businesses in this area. What truly sets us apart is our meticulous workmanship and customer service. Not only are we about making things look great, we are built for longevity as well. We are about construction and base as well as aesthetics.

Our clients are treated like family and every job is done with the caring a precision we would give as if we were working on our own homes. This is why we get so many repeat customers.

What would you want current or potential customers to know about Jesco that they may not know already?

Jesco has also done over 100 house rehabs and flips throughout Long Island. So if anyone knows any potential fix and flips, give us a call.

Also, we do plenty of the “unglamorous” jobs as well, including basement entrances, stoops, sidewalks, etc.

Has Jesco received any awards or recognitions?

We are very proud to be featured in both the Nicolock and the Cambridge Paving Stone catalogues. These huge companies have their choice of thousands of mason’s work and they chose Jesco. It is both exciting and humbling to be chosen.

Is Jesco involved in any local charity work or community groups?

Both during and before the pandemic hit, Jesco has been involved in donations to essential workers. We also donate regularly to local not-for-profits, fundraisers, etc. It’s always been very important for me to give back.

What has been the biggest “win” in Jesco’s history?

The biggest win is definitely the loyal and repeat customers. They are the reason we have been able to achieve this level of success.

What was your favorite backyard creation you have ever done?

A few years back a gentleman with a home on the bluff in Rocky Point gave me total creative control with the project and I ran with it! He gave me a budget of $350K and I created what you see below. How did I do?

What is the biggest risk you have taken with your business?

Other than starting the business in the first place, the biggest risk I have taken is buying the building where my office is in Farmingville. I really wanted to make Jesco a permanent staple in the industry and on Long Island and felt having a permanent home for my business was important.

If you could do it all over again, what would you do differently?

Honestly? Nothing. Every bump and bruise is a learning experience. We try to get better every single day. Every mistake and misstep allows us to learn and get better. One of the keys to a successful business is to constantly learn new things and evolve.

Thanks for sharing your story Brett! How can our audience get ahold of you?

Business Spotlight: George Scarpias – Licensed Real Estate Broker

Here’s the story of a lifelong Long Islander, George Scarpias, who, through his hard work and dedication, has helped hundreds of Long Island families buy or sell their homes.

Hi George! Lets start from the beginning. How did you get started in Real Estate?

I became a real estate agent because I saw a need for change in a very dated industry. Real Estate has become too much of a transaction and less of an experience. I wanted to give a fun and exciting spin to Real Estate by actually treating people like family. Since inception, the Scarpias Team has grown to a team of twelve like-minded, local parents.

What is your connection to Long Island?

Born and raised in Massapequa and a resident for almost 40 years, I have deep roots in the community. I graduated Massapequa High School as captain of the men’s soccer team and have three beautiful children in the school system. In fact, our entire team are local moms and dads.

My business involves buying, selling and renting both Residential and Commercial properties from Montauk to Manhattan. We have many ties to the local markets and have become some of the most referred agents in the local Moms and Dads Groups on Facebook. We are proud to have brought a fun and exciting real estate experience to over 400 local families from these groups.

What is one thing your team is known for over your competitors?

We give a one of a kind experience by always going above and beyond for our clients. Our family first approach makes every client part of the family.

We believe going the extra mile makes a world of a difference. Real Estate fast & furious leaves you with many questions. Our goal is to make your deal as smooth as possible.

What would you want current or potential clients to know about your business that they may not know already?

During the holiday season, we run a Christmas light show on our house that we customize with music and dancing lights. We are known as “The Massapequa Christmas House” on Facebook. We collect toys and donations for a local children’s hospital. During the pandemic, we were able to donate 10,000 “ear savers” for first responders.

What is the biggest “win” in your business’ history?

The biggest “win” for our business I would say, has to be the massive support we have received from the local Moms and Dads groups. The support has been amazing over the years and we are so unbelievably grateful every single day. The George Scarpias Team has become a household name for anything Real Estate.

Has your business won any awards?

Yes we have! We are proud of all of the awards and recognitions we have received:

  • Companywide Top Listing & Sales Agent 2017-2020
  • Top 20 Under 40 Rising Star
  • Coach Pinnacle Agent Top 1% Sales Long Island
  • Pulse Magazine Power Broker of Long Island
  • Presidents’ Club Hall of Fame

You mentioned the charitable work you have done through your Christmas House. What other charities and community groups are you involved with?

We are involved in charities for The John Theissen Children Foundation, The Ashley Wade Foundation, Be a Kid Foundation. We also support local businesses and sports teams in addition to the Massapequa Christmas House.

Thanks for sharing with us, George! Where can people get in touch with you?

People can reach me directly at (516) 330-1949 or via email at [email protected]. Please also follow us on Facebook!

Go to Yoga – Medwell Spa & Yoga

Go to Yoga,

Talk to me…… Yoga.

What is your deal in today’s busy, scary, fast, confusing, unjust and misunderstood world?

I’m “just” a person trying to raise small people to be good humans. Trying to find some girlfriend time, some laundry time, some professional time, some intellectual time, some party time, some exercise time, some time to have a date with my husband, some inspiration and some peace. Some extra sleep would be great, too.

I’d actually love to immerse myself in a book…but that seems to be on the back burner these days. I went to university, I studied hard, I traveled, I learned, I gained wisdom and yet, I feel like I have lost so much of the time with where this big rotating, hot ball of fire and rock is headed.

I’m aware of so much that’s going on; I’m aware of the injustices, the suffering, the hurt and I just want to help. I want to make a difference. I want to be a positive, contributory human. I’m just one person- how can I be of any significance in this vast world of inequality and injustices?

Well, I can.

Last time I checked it often takes two incomes to survive and “thrive” on Long Island. We have access to beautiful beaches, reputable schools and tree lined neighborhoods with a reasonable level of community connectedness and safety for the most part. These privileges don’t come without hard work and a day in day out effort of many contributory individuals.

When we think of “modern” yoga in North America, we think of flexible, zen, expensive yoga apparel and women with time off during the day to do yoga.

Who are these people? How do “they” get to be the ones practicing yoga while the rest of us are slaving away trying to make ends meet? At the end of the day, there sure doesn’t seem to be a lot of time left over to steal away to do an hour of yoga let alone drive there and back AND grab a shower.

How do I get to be a “yogi?” I want zen, I want to feel peaceful and I want to stop feeling like I’m burning the candle at both ends. Surely, I also want to stop being angry in traffic, stop yelling at my kids, and hey, I sure would like to reconnect with my partner, too.

At the end of the busy workday, when you’re done with 9-5 (or more!), errands, making something edible for dinner and maybe even carving out some personal time for yourself, yoga is waiting for you.

Many individuals don’t consider themselves to be a “yogi” whether it be due to a lack of participation, a lack of flexibility or perhaps a lack of accessibility. Yoga roots in India lead by spiritual leaders with decades of practice can often seem daunting and an unknown world. Mainstream life gets busy, but you know what?

Yoga doesn’t care about anything but …….YOU.

Yoga doesn’t care what you wear, to practice. Lululemon? Yoga doesn’t care!

Yoga doesn’t care if you go to a studio, the floor of your home, a local park or even the beach.

Yoga is….you.

Yoga is your mindset.

Yoga is every fiber of your being.

Yoga is the 5 minutes of gratitude that you carve out for yourself before your day starts.

Yoga is sitting in your car before going into that big meeting or that double shift and closing your eyes to thank a power higher than yourself for the opportunity to try to serve, to learn and to grow.

Yoga is getting into a car accident and not screaming at the other party but rather asking them if they are ok?

Yoga is thanking your partner, friend or children for the smallest of things that they do with zero expectations that they will do more tomorrow or repeat their actions again.

Yoga is about looking at the glass half full not half empty.

Yoga is gratitude.

Yoga is love.

Yoga is trust.

Yoga is life sustaining breath.

Yoga is compassion.

Yoga is about stating what you “get” to do today instead of what you “have” to do.

Food shopping? I get to do it. Laundry? I’m grateful for clean, warm dry clothes to wear each day. Breakup? My destiny is coming. Better things are happening in my life.

Yoga is a re-programming and unlearning of everything you were told to be true.

Yoga is always there for you, if you wish to see it as such.

Lonely? Go to yoga.

Happy? Go to yoga.

When you go to yoga, you think the best of everyone and everything with zero expectations of reciprocation.

Yoga sets you free, your thoughts, your preconceived notions and everything you were told to be true.

Yoga allows you to see the best in everyone and everything.

Consider……going to yoga.

The collective yoga mindset of each of us might just change the world; you never know.

The 5 Steps to Branding

By Lindsay Aliseo

Branding your business is, in my opinion, the single most important part of building a business. If you have a brand that people love it is because of the branding efforts put forth purposely to build the brand. So, how does a business owner begin to brand? I will review The 5 Steps to Branding YOU and your business in this article.

  1. Knowing your Target Market.
  2. Logo, Fonts, Colors, & Marketing Material Themes
  3. Attracting your Target Market
  4. Consistency & Diversifying your Marketing
  5. Is your Brand Memorable?

Knowing your Target Market

If you are unsure what your target market is, we can take a look here. If you are unable to pinpoint your target market, then you may not have the right business or product.  Knowing your target market helps narrow down your marketing efforts and will cost you much less in the end. Let’s nail down your target market!

  1. Is your product or service geared towards children, teens, adults or seniors?
  2. Is your product or service gender based?
  3. Is your product or service location based?
  4. Do you have a niche product or service?
    – Something that is for use in the kitchen
    – A product or service for pregnancy
    – Carpentry tools

Knowing your audience enables you to create the appropriate marketing materials and attract them with the right marketing placements. It also begins to generate efficiency within your business. Efficiency is my other major component of building a business. Always work smarter not harder! I could write PAGES on organization and efficiency but for now I will stay on topic.

Logo, Fonts, Colors & Marketing Material Themes

Your look should have a direct relationship with your product or service and your market. Simplicity is best here. The more complicated and busy your logo and themes are, the more likely you are to lose those prospective customers. Realistically, you have about 2-3 seconds to grab the attention of and hook a customer. Below I have listed a couple of my rules when creating graphics, logos and advertisements.

  1. Keep it simple.
  2. Stick with a theme.

The consistency of a theme will help your market remember you the next time they see you. Try creating a marketing campaign that runs for a certain amount of time, keeping the theme consistent, this will be beneficial to your acquisition numbers. Create a format for your graphics and advertisements. Use no more than three types of graphics with the same color scheme and logo layout for each.
Format 1: Graphic – Title – Logo – Themed Styles, Colors & Fonts

Format 2: Framed – Clear Offer/Message – Logo – Themed Colors and Fonts

Format 3: Cover Photo – Logo – Themed Colors

Attracting your Target Market

You may have heard of Attraction Marketing in the past but didn’t really understand how to use it or maybe you thought it was something made up by all of the self-proclaimed business gurus on social media.  I am here to tell you Attraction Marketing is the second most important part of building and branding YOU and your business!

What is Attraction Marketing?  Well, it is exactly what it sounds like. You attract customers TO YOU! The concept of attraction marketing is all about what you put out into the world. If you are always posting negative things on your social media pages, constantly arguing with other people in Moms Groups and privately or publicly complaining about other businesses or your customers, I can promise you that you are branding yourself as unapproachable. What you do in your personal life will ALWAYS reflect in your business life. On the other hand, if you are supportive, kind, and uplifting, especially on your personal social media accounts, you will brand yourself as not only approachable but people will start to gravitate to you. They will want more of what you have to offer as a person. If you are consistent with your positive, supportive and uplifting identity, people will remember you as such and when they need something that you have to offer in your business, they will be more inclined to use you. I created a short video that really gets into Facebook posting and Attraction Marketing, that you can watch here Attraction Marketing and Facebook

The next part of attracting your target market is to know the right outlets to use. These days exposure to your target market is often accomplished with the help of social media. If your target market is men and women over the age of 70, living on Long Island, social media may not be the right place for you to advertise, unless you are marketing to the caretakers of these seniors. In this case, your marketing efforts need to be tailored not to the seniors themselves but the ones that may help make decisions for them.

If your target market is made up of women that are pregnant or may be thinking of starting a family in the next 12-15 months, living on Long Island, it would be beneficial to join your local moms group, or groups pertaining to pregnancy and childcare. Most of these groups will not allow you to advertise but will allow you to comment on a post when asked for specific help and more specifically, asking for help that your business provides. Please be careful when utilizing this method for free marketing. You should always offer free advice or information first. If asked, you then provide your business information. No one likes to have a business owner shove their business down their throat, unsolicited.

Want more information on branding your business in Long Island Moms Group with an audience of over 22 thousand people? Watch this Daily Deals Video for more Information

Consistency & Diversifying your Marketing

The Rule of 7 is your starting point for consistency and diversifying. What is The Rule of 7? Simply stated, your prospective customer needs to be exposed to your brand seven times before they will purchase from you. The idea behind The Rule of 7 is that you are building CREDIBILITY with CONSISTENCY over each exposure. You are ATTRACTING your target market by conveying value and trust and creating a MEMORABLE brand. On average, by the seventh time a person has been exposed to your brand they will remember it for when they need your service or product. But, you can without a doubt hook them before that!

How do I make sure my target audience is exposed to my brand seven times?

  1. Diversifying your marketing efforts.
  2. Staying consistent with your marketing.
  3. Making sure your branding is clear and concise.

Long Island Exclusive offers business owners the unique opportunity to brand their business with our Long Island audience of over 200k people in a multitude of ways. Ensuring that your target market will be exposed to your brand steadily and diversely.

Is your Brand Memorable

Securing your brands memorability, depends on successfully completing and staying consistent with these five steps. Whoever created the saying “Consistency is Key” could not have been more on point. You need to make a serious commitment to branding YOU and your business. For some this is an easy feat as they already portray the positive person they are to the world. For others, this may be a challenge at first but once you feel the immensely strong effects of your efforts, you will never turn back and the future will be bright.

Elder Law Attorney, Christopher M. Petillo

Here’s the story of a fellow Long Islander, Christopher M. Petillo, who is an experienced elder law attorney:

Tell us why you chose elder care law?
(as told by Christopher M. Petillo, Esq, CPA, CELA – Elder Law Attorney)
Growing up, my grandparents lived under the same roof.  Aging, and the challenges associated with aging in place, were real life problems that our family faced daily.  My parents and grandparents were not aware of what benefits were out there that could have made that time easier for them.

Tell us about your practice:
I am Certified as an Elder Law Attorney (“CELA”) by the National Elder Law Foundation as accredited by the American Bar Association.  Some of the areas I specialize in are:

  • Elder Law
  • Estate Planning
  • Planning to Reduce/Avoid Estate & Gift Taxes
  • Planning for a Family Member with Special Needs (to protect SSI and Medicaid benefits
  • Planning to Avoid or Reduce Estate Taxes
  • Trusts to Avoid Probate
  • Irrevocable Trusts to protect assets for Medicaid purposes in the event that Long Term Care is needed
  • Wills
  • Decision Making Documents (Financial Power of Attorney, Health Care Proxy Living Will (for end of life instructions)
  • Medicaid Applications (Nursing Home, Home Care, certain assisted living programs)

What is one thing you are known for over your competitors?

I offer Zoom appointments, in-person meetings and even house calls.
I pride myself on being able to use analytical skills to help craft a plan that meets the needs of clients in an ever-changing world.
Taking the time to understand the facts and circumstances is very important – it can dramatically impact which planning tool works best for achieving the client’s goals.
I am also a CPA, so I am sensitive to tax issues that may arise in planning.

Has your business won any awards?
I was voted one of New York’s “SuperLawyers” in New York Super Lawyers — Metro Edition (Fall 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020).

What is the biggest “win” in your practice’s history?
I went to a charity golf outing (I do not golf often – if you look closely at the trophy in my office, it reads “Westbury Senior Citizen Outing – Highest Score” which, in golf, is not good lol)
At the meeting, a gentleman sat next to me and asked what I did for a living.  I told him, and he said “my aunt in a nursing home right now.”
I asked, “Is she on Medicaid?”
“No – she is privately paying for it!”
“How much is that costing her?”
“$17,000 per month!”
“Does she have Long Term Care Insurance?”
“No – she sold her house and that $ is being eaten up every month.  We were told there’s nothing we could do because of the 5 year rule.”
“Come to my office tomorrow.”
Long story short – we helped save half of his aunt’s nest egg so that $ was available for private duty nurses and any other expenses to make her life better, while giving her a chance to make a gift of a portion of her life savings, if she so intended.

What would you want potential clients to know about your practice that they may not know already?
I am not a “hard sell” – I share information with my clients at the consultation on what I believe will be best help.  I give them a chance to absorb it all without sales pressure.
I may have had a similar experience to what you are facing today.  My mother was in need of home care for 6 years before her care needs rose to the level of needing nursing home care for the last 2 years of her life.  Long Island nursing homes like the one she was in can cost $17,000 per MONTH.  I would like to help you plan in advance before such a care need arises.  But, if a crisis is upon us, we can still make the best of the situation – it’s never too late to protect something.  All is not lost, nor does it have to be.

Thanks Christopher!

“It’s not for you. It’s for them.”

“It’s not for you. It’s for them.”

Yes, as there is truth behind this statement, the problem is 95% of the people I have helped set up a customized “Life Insurance “ plan have no idea how much they can benefit “For themself” not just for their families or loved ones. So many have the perception that life insurance is only there if you God forbid passed away before life expectancy, your loved ones will be left with a sum of Tax-Free money. What most don’t realize is if you do not pass away young, these plans can be one of the best sources of retirement because all the money inside the cash value of a whole life, universal life or variable life insurance grows tax-free over the life of the policy. So you essentially can kill two birds ?? with one stone ☄️, Protection for your family or a loved one while saving for your retirement. These plans are very complex and a lot more details go into design one, let’s discuss your options on how to design a plan that suits you and your needs best.

Now more than ever should be an eye-opener to have protection. As of today, 23,649 deaths have been confirmed of the COVID-19 virus. Think about how many families will be financially affected by the loss of a partner’s income they no longer have for bills and life.
